Program
Description
This is a new program that allows students to earn an MS in the Professional MS program in Biotechnology (http://www.biotechms.neu.edu/) in addition to their BS in Biology/BS in Biochemistry. The total program for the two degrees, including three coop experiences, will take only two extra academic semesters as it takes advantage of the double counting which is allowed for combined programs .
Requirements for
Admission
to the Program
- Completion of the undergraduate Biochemistry course and corequisite lab (BIOU323 and BIOU324)
- 80 SH of academic credit
- Minimum gpa of 3.00
- Completion of one or more co-op experiences in
biotechnology
Application Procedure
Students should apply for the BS/MS program during their 5th academic semester after consultation with Kostia Bergman, Director of Undergraduate Studies in Biology.
office hours: (http://www.biology.neu.edu/bioadvising.html)
Acceptance recommendations will be made by the appropriate admissions committee after completion of 80 SH and one coop experience. Admission to the program is competitive.
Requirements During Undergraduate Studies (first 8 semesters)
For the four advanced electives required as part of the Biology major, undergraduate students should take graduate level courses. In double-listed courses they must complete any extra work expected of graduate students and they will be graded in the same way as graduate students.
- Students will earn at least 16 SH of graduate credit during their undergraduate program.
- Students will be considered undergraduates for tuition and financial aid purposes until this is completed. Following this they will be considered graduate students, will pay graduate tuition, and will be eligible for graduate financial aid.
- At least 2 six-month coops, preferably in the biotechnology industry, will be required during the undergraduate part of the program.
Requirements During Graduate Studies
- After successful completion of their undergraduate program, students will be eligible to take the second year of the Molecular Track or the Pharmaceutical Track of the Biotechnology Program (=18 SH).
The 1 SH reflection seminar will be waived as the students will have completed the 4 SH Biology Capstone course. At this point students will be treated as graduate students for purposes of tuition and fees, financial aid etc.
- Students must complete a third coop/ internship in the biotechnology industry. This could be completed during the undergrad program or during the graduate year.
Graduation Without Completion of the Program
If a student decides at some point to pursue only the undergraduate portion of the combined degree, the Biology Department will still recognize the graduate courses taken in lieu of the advanced electives. Credit from the undergraduate degree cannot be used toward the graduate degree at a later date.
